Place de la Gare, Luxembourg
The redevelopment and extension of the CFL headquarters at Place de la Gare transforms a key 1950s building within Luxembourg’s transport hub while preserving its architectural identity. Defined by its monumental concrete façades and mosaic detailing, the existing structure is carefully retained and restored, reinforcing its role within one of the city’s most emblematic urban settings.
The project introduces a new extension that establishes a clear relationship between old and new. While the historic façade remains unchanged, a contemporary elevation towards the railway platforms creates a distinct counterpart through a structured façade system that filters light and reveals interior activity. The intervention also strengthens connections to Rue du Fort Neipperg, improving the building’s integration within the surrounding urban fabric.
Working conditions and spatial clarity are significantly enhanced through a reorganisation of the internal layout. A central atrium separates and links the two volumes, bringing natural light deep into the building while improving orientation and circulation. Shared spaces, including a staff restaurant organised around a planted patio and a series of roof terraces, provide areas for relaxation and informal use throughout the day.
Retaining key structural elements of the existing building forms the basis of the project’s environmental strategy, reducing both demolition and embodied carbon. The upgraded envelope, efficient building systems, and integrated energy concept further improve performance, supporting the goal of high environmental certifications.
Balancing heritage preservation with contemporary requirements defined the project approach. The result is a coherent administrative complex that combines continuity and transformation, offering a modern working environment while maintaining a strong connection to Luxembourg’s architectural and urban identity.
"The new building will be perfectly in line with our strategy which advocates the responsible use of resources. It will thus enable us to lower the levels of energy and water consumption and will benefit from excellent energy certifications."
