Cessange, Luxembourg
This striking residential building in Cessange, Luxembourg is a monolith that deliberately contrasts with its neighbouring structures. Composed of simple, pure volumes and clad entirely in shiny black metal, the project asserts a unique presence in the urban landscape while establishing a clear relationship between architecture and art.
The Luxembourgish graffiti artist SUMO intervened directly on the building, extending his work from ground to roof and integrating art seamlessly into the construction.
“The first thing I do, is to destroy the white space… Layer by layer. I fill out the space and paint over it again, impulsively… It’s a cycle of destruction followed by creation…”
— SUMO, Graffiti artist
This collaboration transforms the façade into an active surface, turning it into a medium of expression that contributes to the building’s identity and its presence within the neighbourhood.
Inside, the design prioritises light, flexibility, and privacy. The three upper floors each house apartments, with living areas facing the street and sliding panels providing both intimacy and protection from noise and external views. Bedrooms are positioned at the rear for tranquillity, while the ground floor accommodates parking, ensuring functional and discreet access.
The project focuses on everyday living by offering adaptable spaces that respond to different needs. The interplay between openness and enclosure allows residents to shape their environment, balancing exposure to the city with moments of retreat.
By day, the building’s reflective black surfaces contrast strongly with neighbouring plaster façades, radiating warmth and intensity, while on cloudy days it subtly blends with the sky. At night, subtle illumination from the city accentuates its presence without overwhelming the surroundings.
Through careful architectural planning and close collaboration with the client, the project demonstrates how a clear architectural concept can create a strong urban identity while providing residents with comfort, privacy, and a distinctive living environment.
