The multifunctional sports field in Leiwen is conceived as an open and inclusive space that extends beyond a conventional sports facility. It brings together sport, recreation, and landscape to create a shared environment for the local community and the wider region, supporting both active use and everyday social interaction.
Set within a landscape shaped by vineyards and regional wine culture, the project responds to its context by strengthening existing connections between leisure routes and public spaces. The design builds on the network of walking and cycling paths that run through the valley, positioning the site as an accessible destination for residents and visitors alike. By broadening its programme, the sports park becomes a welcoming place for different age groups and user profiles.
The spatial concept rethinks the organisation of a traditional sports field by introducing greater flexibility and diversity of use. While the 250-metre running track remains a central element, it is complemented by a meandering pathway that moves through areas of wildflower planting, encouraging slower and more informal movement. This layered approach creates a sequence of spaces that support both structured sport and more relaxed recreational activities.
A strong emphasis is placed on intergenerational use and accessibility. Open and adaptable areas allow for a range of activities, from organised sport to informal gathering, making the park an inclusive environment for families, children, and visitors. The integration of landscape and movement supports both physical activity and social exchange.
Ecological considerations are embedded within the landscape design. Prairie and wildflower planting supports biodiversity and pollinators while reducing maintenance requirements. New tree planting, with varied species and seasonal characteristics, strengthens the green structure of the site and brings nature deeper into the park. These interventions enhance permeability, ecological diversity, and the overall environmental quality of the site.
The project establishes a connected and adaptable recreational landscape that links sport, nature, and community, creating a future-oriented public space for Leiwen.
