Brill School
Dudelange, Luxembourg
Located in Dudelange, the Brill School is a historic educational facility whose origins date back to the early 1900s. Extended in 1976 and modernised on several occasions, the building has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of school life. Between 2023 and 2026, the school underwent a comprehensive renovation that preserved the existing structure, part of which is protected, while adapting it to current requirements in terms of safety, functionality and technical infrastructure.
The project was developed with particular attention to the existing building, seeking to preserve its architectural character while introducing carefully considered interventions within the existing structure. At the same time, the school’s organisation and use were rethought to better support contemporary educational needs. Classrooms were modernised, circulation improved, and accessibility significantly enhanced. Through these transformations, the school now offers children a more open and welcoming learning environment.
The renovation is rooted in the conservation and enhancement of the existing building, reflecting a respectful approach to the built heritage. Balancing preservation and adaptation, the project responds to the constraints of a partially protected structure while meeting current standards for safety, accessibility and building services. Key interventions included compliance upgrades, particularly regarding fire safety and evacuation routes, the installation of a lift and improvements to access throughout the building. Technical infrastructure, including electrical and IT networks, was renewed, while targeted architectural modifications helped optimise the use of space.
Ensuring the continuity of school activities throughout the construction period represented a significant challenge. Temporary modular facilities were installed on site, allowing teaching activities to continue while the works progressed in several phases. The renovation was completed in April 2026.
By carefully balancing past and present, the renovation of the Brill School demonstrates how an existing educational building can evolve while retaining its identity. Through a considered approach that combines preservation with adaptation, the project provides open, accessible and functional learning spaces that support the everyday experience of pupils while extending the life of a historic school building in Dudelange.
