Möbino – Espresso Cup
Dudelange, Luxembourg
Möbino is an espresso cup that transforms a daily ritual into a small design experience. Inspired by the geometry of the Möbius strip, the cup is formed as a single continuous surface that symbolises infinity and continuity. Its sculptural form translates a complex architectural idea into a functional everyday object.
The concept originated from the Luxembourg Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai designed by Metaform Architects. The pavilion itself was based on the Möbius strip, an infinite twisted surface with neither beginning nor end. Möbino interprets this architectural geometry at a smaller scale, transforming the dynamic ribbon of the pavilion into a tactile ceramic object that can be held in the hand.
The design process began with physical experimentation using paper models to recreate the organic movement of the Möbius ribbon. These early studies were followed by digital modelling based on photographic analysis of the pavilion geometry. Curves were reconstructed in a three-dimensional environment and projected in concentric sections to explore possible shapes. Numerous prototypes were produced and tested, moving from digital models to 3D printed forms and eventually to ceramic moulds.
“Metaform’s main intention with this project is to highlight the honourable activity at Kräizbierg, an inclusive approach for people living with special needs whilst focusing on social belonging.”
— Shahram Agaajani, Founding Partner, Metaform
A key challenge of the project was translating a precise geometric concept into a manufacturable ceramic object. During the production process the cup had to withstand drying, baking and firing while maintaining its proportions and structural integrity. Several iterations were required to refine the form and achieve the correct volume for an espresso while preserving the clarity of the Möbius geometry.
Each Möbino cup is formed, crafted and glazed by hand at Ateliers Kräizbierg in Luxembourg. The workshops are part of a cooperative that provides professional training and meaningful employment for people with special needs. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to combining design, craftsmanship and social inclusion. All proceeds from Möbino support the activities of the Kräizbierg Foundation.
“We are very proud that, after months of research and testing, we found an innovative solution to make this beautiful design come to life. It is a successful partnership where design meets ambitious craftsmanship. We hope you enjoy this high-quality product as much as we do.”
— Marc Bissen, Head of Management, Ateliers Kräizbierg
The final object balances geometric precision with the subtle variations of handcrafted production. Viewed from above, the edge forms a continuous circular motion, while the sides descend smoothly to the base. The twisted surface guides the espresso along the rim and into the cup in one fluid movement.
Beyond its sculptural character, the Möbius geometry also serves a functional purpose. The continuous surface allows the coffee to flow naturally along the curve, helping to preserve the crema and enhance the flavour of the espresso. The cup is constructed with a double ceramic wall separated by a small air gap, providing thermal insulation that keeps the coffee warm while the exterior remains comfortable to hold. Its form follows the natural curvature of the hand, with a gently plunging edge shaped ergonomically for the thumb. Designed to hold 20 ml of coffee, Möbino delivers a balanced and refined espresso experience.
