Gëlle Fra - Place de la constitution
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
The project for Place de la Constitution builds on the strength of its existing context, shaped by the Bastion overlooking the Pétrusse valley and defined by the presence of the Gëlle Fra. Rather than introducing a new identity, the intervention reveals and enhances the qualities already embedded in the site, making the square more accessible, functional, and comfortable for both residents and visitors.
A key ambition is to reconnect the square to the city centre and integrate it into the wider network of public spaces. This is achieved by improving permeability and establishing a coherent material language that relates to the surrounding urban fabric. The square is reimagined as a continuous and legible surface, open to multiple uses and capable of adapting to different rhythms of the city.
The space is designed to support everyday life as well as larger public events. Its open and flexible layout allows for spontaneous use while accommodating organised activities such as gatherings, performances, and markets. A subtle ground pattern provides structure without imposing fixed elements, enabling the square to remain adaptable and inclusive.
A compact pavilion is introduced as a supporting element within this framework, creating a point of interaction between the square and its surroundings. Its presence contributes to the activation of the space while maintaining clear views towards the monument and the landscape beyond.
The project encourages social exchange by creating a setting where different uses and users can coexist. Through a careful balance of openness, structure, and material continuity, the square becomes a shared urban space that supports both individual use and collective experience.
Particular attention is given to the presence of the Monument du Souvenir, which is highlighted through a restrained scenographic approach. Subtle bronze patterns integrated into the ground reinforce the historical significance of the site while remaining part of the overall composition.
The intervention transforms Place de la Constitution into a coherent and adaptable public space, strengthening its role within the city while preserving its identity and relationship to the landscape.
